Laser Safety Precautions

The following are general laser operation and safety precautions and may or may not apply to your laser installation. Please contact Medical Health Physics for advice on safety precautions and evaluation of hazards and controls for non-beam hazards.

Class 3B beam hazard

  • Post laser signage on the door or area
  • Ensure that users are trained before operating class 3B lasers
  • Have Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for each laser(s) and ensure that users understand and follow the SOPs
  • Enclose the beam path as much as possible; even a transparent enclosure will prevent individuals from placing their head or reflecting objects within the beam path
  • Eye wear is needed for all individuals working within the controlled area
  • Use beam stops at the end of useful beam paths
  • Operate the laser only in a restricted area or approved area
  • Place the laser beam path well above or well below the eye level of any sitting or standing observers, whenever possible
  • Ensure that lasers are mounted firmly
  • Always use proper laser eye protection when operating the laser unless it is completely enclosed
  • Have a key switch or computer login activation to prevent tampering by unauthorized use
  • Remove all unnecessary mirror-like surfaces from within the vicinity of the laser beam path

Class 4 beam hazard

Use all the above Class 3B safety precautions, plus the following:

  • Have a visual or sound alarm activated when the laser is in use
  • Operate laser only within a localized enclosure or in a controlled workplace
  • If enclosing the laser completely is not possible, interlock the room or area, or use a barrier at the room or the area entrance
  • Having a physical key switch is required
  • Use a beam stop at the end of useful beam paths, as well as fire- resistant target materials.
